December 2004 Blogs

Well 2004 is vastly growing to a close, (as I type it is The Year 2005 minus 29hours and 24 minutes) it is time to list The Official Sparkster.net Top 10 Films of 2004.

1. Shrek 2
I absolutely love this film, now that it has been released on DVD I have seen it several times this year. The animation is fantastic and the humour is just hilarious. Not only is Shrek 2 my best film of the year, but also one of the best sequels I have ever seen – really looking forward to Shrek 3!

2. Collateral
Hard hitting action film starring Tom Cruise playing an untraditional role as the movie villain. His character of a cold blooded hit man is superb, this alongside an excellent supporting cast and storyline makes Collateral one of my top films of 2004.

3. Shaun of the Dead
Very funny film from the creators of TV’s Spaced. Shaun of the Dead has been able to do what so many other films have failed in the past – create a spoof horror films and make it very funny. What makes this movie even better is that it’s a British film. It’s great to see such quality film coming from this side of the pond.

4. Layer Cake
Another film from the creators of Lock, Stock and Snatch (note: not written by Guy Ritchie), this certainly didn’t disappoint. The film focused on the Class A Drugs Scene across Britain. Layer Cake was somewhat darker than Lock, Stock and Snatch although the “British Gangster” theme strongly remained.

5. Football Factory
The third British film in my Top 10 of 2004 and the one I didn’t see at the cinema. The film may well be called “Football Factory” but you don’t actually see a ball throughout the whole movie. The film follows the story of a group of football hooligans and the positives and negatives of their love for violence, drugs and trouble. Based upon the novel by John King, some have criticised the film for not being as good as the written piece. This aside, Football Factory is an extremely good British film.

6. Fahrenheit 9/11
The highly controversial documentary by Michael Moore about George Bush and his affairs (not the type of ‘affair’ associated with Bill Clinton!). The film was really interesting and showed what a lot of us expected – corruption does indeed exist across many parties.

7. Shark Tale
One of many computer animated films released in 2004 (do studios actually make cartoons anymore?). A very enjoyable family comedy which will no doubt appeal to viewers of all ages. The cast which includes Robert De Niro, Jack Black and Will Smith were all superb and the computer animated characters were modelled on them perfectly.

8. The Incredibles
I was kind of disappointed by this title. I first saw the trailer before Shrek 2 in the summer and thought it would be in my Top 5 of 2004. Still, The Incredibles was still a first-class movie, with excellent animation and humour. Just don’t expect another Shrek 2 like I did. Certainly worthy of my Top 10 movies though!

9. Bridget Jones’ Diary 2: The Edge of Reason
More British comedy here in this very funny sequel. Like the original, Bridget Jones 2 was full of cringe-worthy moments and very funny situations. This may be a chick-flick but is unlike most soppy-girl films, just watch the Die Hard Box Set afterwards to make you feel hard again :o)

10. Anchor Man
Now, this wasn’t a very popular film with critics but I thought it was hilarious. For anybody who as seen the Austin Powers movies, the humour is very similar, some people may even call it a rip-off. The jokes were very funny and the humour was both dry and very bizarre. I liked it a lot.

Other films worth mentioning that I liked which didn’t make the list…

Alien vs. Predator – highly underrated
Christmas with the Kranks – nice festive Christmas movie
Super Size Me – I’ll NEVER eat a McDonalds again (KFC & Burger King ok though!)
Bad Santa – Crude, dry & funny... and released in 2003
School of Rock – Technically a 2003 film, I saw it in 2004. Had it been made this year would have made the Top 10.

And two films you should avoid

More Crap Festive TV Rast-Clarts!

Another disappointing Christmas Special last night, this time it was Bo Selecta causing the tiresome television viewing.

The episode was based upon the Bo Selecta bear who moved into Patsy Kensit’s house, drank beer, ate food and watched Sky+. A very poor episode even with cameos from Michael Jackson, Craig David, Mel B and numerous other characters.

The last seasonal offering comes from The Vicar of Dibley on New Years Day. If that proves to be as bad as the Christmas Day episode, 2004 will officially be declared “Worst Christmas TV Year Ever!”

What’s the point in having something as good as Sky+ if there’s nothing to record using it? It’s like having a BMW Z8 with no petrol.

The Plymouth sailors get another stuffing from Super Leeds!

For it’s Leeds United, Leeds United FC.
We’re the greatest team in football, the world has ever seen!

Glory, Glory Leeds United
Glory, Glory Leeds United
Glory, Glory Leeds United and the Whites go marching on.
On! On! On!
On! On! On!

Excuse that sing song but I’m celebrating another win for the Super Whites who beat Plymouth 2-1 today at Elland Road.

Healy! Healy! Leeds United's Saviour

October signing David Healy was yet again superb and is in strong contention for my player of the season. With Crewe at home on Jan 1st, Leeds could get three league wins in a row – the first time since 2002.

Keep it up Super Leeds!

Well, it’s been a whole week since I last blogged. So extended was my absence that regular visitor Dan from Daninthemix.com thought I was dead, I’m sure he wasn’t the only one equally concerned! I’ve just been busy with Christmas and for once simply couldn’t think of anything worthy of blogging about.

I had a good Christmas seeing both family and friends. Got some good presents including a DAB Digital Radio, the 15minutes of snow we got was also good (although next year 15 hours would be nice!)

Christmas TV was bad. The Vicar of Dibley was very disappointing. It has lost the original humour of the classic episodes from the 90s, the characters have aged, the humour had changed and I was not impressed; hopefully the New Years Day special will be an improvement.

Dawn French’s friend Jennifer Saunders couldn’t do much better… in fact she did worse. Absolutely Fabulous was awful and certainly a show which should have been left in the last millennium. Series 1-3 of Ab Fab were great, everything after has just been poo.

Moving on from the dribble of Christmas telly, along with my DAB Radio, I also got a very, very nice Christmas present. It may have been a day late and not a material gift but it was quite possibly my best gift of Christmas. The present was 3 goals and 3 precious points for Leeds United who (against all the odds) beat Sunderland away on Boxing Day! I listened live on Radio Aire (over the Internet) and Leeds seemed to play really well!

In celebration of this wonderful victory, I made a goal/highlights montage of the game mixed into an infamous dance track – download it here.

Sky (Stephanie McIntosh) with her big juicy pair

Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours…

It’s Christmas time so once again the BBC has taken the only good soap off TV for two weeks, just like they did when the Olympics, tennis and football were on. OK, Australia gets a whole month’s break from the soap, but it’s still annoying how the BBC take it off TV so often. When everyone gets Digital TV and the BBC Sport channel is created they'll have less of an excuse to take it off for sporting events.

To rub salt into the wounds they don’t cancel shit soaps like EastEnders and force dozens of episodes of it upon us over the Christmas and New Year period. Bah bum-hug!

"Lets get away from the cinema now! They're about to show the outtakes!"

Friday night I went to see Taxi at the cinema. What an awful film! In fact it was the worst thing I have seen at the cinema all year. It was so bad it made Churchill: The Hollywood Years look good!

The film had a crap storyline, terrible acting and the humour was about as funny as falling in cow shit. Just a terrible, terrible, terrible film. When I looked yesterday it was already in the “Top 100 Worst Movies” on IMDB!

It wasn’t a super weekend for Leeds either who drew against Millwall. Leeds scored late in the first half and really deserved to win the game. Milwall got a late and very dubious penalty at the end to equalise.

Santa Claus hasn’t been too good to Leeds this year. Maybe he’ll give them a late gift when they play Sunderland on Boxing Day. Most fans will remember when they played Sunderland on Boxing Day 2002 and won 2-1, hopefully they can do the same 2 years on.

Looking at the Christmas TV Guide for this year there isn’t much on worth watching. One thing I did notice that looked good though was The Animal Hospital Christmas Special 2004.

Sparkster.net has been able to get an exclusive preview of this very exciting episode…

G'day

Christmas is a relaxing time for most of the UK, but the staff at the RSPCA Animal Hospital in Manchester still have a tough job.

Today we'll be looking at a pussy who has caught a nasty rash, but first lets see how the 'Vets on the Road' got on when they had to help a horse who has an injured leg and hoof...
This poor creature is called Ruud. He has injured his achilles.
The kindest thing in this case would be to put the animal to sleep with a shotgun blast to the head, however the owner is strongly against it.

Thats the first part of the Christmas special over, join us tomorrow when we'll be going to Leeds to help out a donkey get some liposuction...

I read a bizarre story in the news today. Manchester United, who are due to play the mighty Exeter City in the FA Cup in January have been successful in banning their opposition’s players from performing their trademark celebration if they score.

Exeter City players commonly impersonate an aeroplane after scoring and for the FA Cup tie will be paid £1,000 by budget airline Flybe for every goal they score.

Man Utd fans have kicked up stink (just for a change) and have banned this celebration as they claim it is disrespectful to the 21 people, including seven players who died in the 1958 Munich air disaster.

Now, before anyone thinks I am being disrespectful towards the disaster, I am not. It was a terrible tragedy in which many innocent, good civilians and players lost their lives, a tragic day for football and the family & friends of the victims. The thing is… its almost 50 years ago! 100,000’s of people have died in aeroplane disasters since then (what about the September 11th events?).

The celebrations have no connection to Manchester United at all, so no malice or disrespect is or was ever intended.

I have no pictures of Exeter City players performing their goal celebration. What I do have however is numerous images of MANCHESTER UNITED players performing aeroplane style goal celebrations! Maybe I’m missing something, but why is it ok for them to do it and not their opponents?

I'm not taking the piss or having a dig at Man Utd like I have in the past when they've lost - I am genuinely confused! If anyone can explain, please let me know!

P.S. Sorry about all the red non ManU fans! :o)

For those interested, here is the original article.

I have been reading a very promising message board thread on IMDB regarding a new X-Files movie. X-Files fans will know that the series is done and dusted, the aliens are going to invade earth in the future and Mulder & Scully have fled to avoid death from powers above. Not much room for anything else in the saga now the truth is out... or is there!!??

Robert Patrick who played Special Agent John Doggett in the 8th and 9th seasons has been quoted as saying. "I owe my sci fi fans a great deal of my career and I look forward in doing some more. We have the X-Files movie coming up soon and I can't wait to reprise my role of John Dogget once again".

What with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson both hinting in the past about a 2nd movie, the truth may still be out there. The new movie is also rumoured to be a whole new story, nothing to do with the mythology.

You know it’s finally Christmas when Radio 1 play the fabulous Eminem parody Stanta created for The Chris Moyles Show. It was played this morning for first time in 2004 (I think!).

Originally released back in 2000 when Eminem was making good music, Leeds were in The Champions League and Gladiator was the must have DVD for Christmas. How thing’s have changed.

The Stanta parody however is still just as good as it was four years ago. For anyone who has never heard it, or if you have and want to hear it again here it is for download (remember, no "hotlinking" please).

Happy Christmas, have a Proper Crimbo! :o)

I’ve just watched the Fulham-Man Utd game which finished 1-1, Mr. Ferguson was not impressed – hahahaha! Alan Smith got the first goal for Manchester United and he is who I will be blogging about tonight.

Long time visitors to Sparkster.net will know that since Smith’s move from Leeds to Man Utd, he hasn’t been my favourite player. In fact I commonly referred to him as Alan “Scum” Smith. I think for myself it is time to move on from these feelings and remember the good he did for Leeds.

Last season, I learnt that the Leeds board had set a meeting with Smith where they told him that he would be sold and had no Leeds future; this was even before the season ended. Smith left the meeting in tears – not really a player desperate to get away.

While at Leeds, Smithy always gave 110% even when the other 10 players on the pitch were simply pissing about. If all the other Leeds players over the past 3 seasons gave as much effort as Smithy did Leeds wouldn’t be in the position they are now – they would be top of the Premiership!

Smith still loves Leeds. According to many, while playing for Man Utd in last weeks Champions League game against Fenerbahce, he was asked by Man Utd fans to “kiss the badge” as he so commonly did for Leeds. Smith then shook his head and did the trademark Leeds salute!

I’d now like to wish Smithy all the best of luck in his career (although I do still want Man Utd to fail!). Also to say, if you ever get the chance to leave Man Utd please take it! I will always welcome Smith is always welcome back at Elland Road when he decides its time to come home.

I still HATE Man Utd by the way! :o)

Well, firstly I am very pleased that I can’t predict football results properly! I thought Leeds would get hammered by West Ham but the game finished at a very respectable 1-1. Leeds won a penalty in the dying seconds of the game to grab the equaliser.

Many West Ham fans were furious as they thought Leeds striker David Healy dived to get the penalty. I will admit, it wasn’t a penalty BUT if West Ham fans are honest with themselves they will know that Leeds were denied two clear penalties earlier in the game.

Even so, you could say Leeds got lucky which is just what manager Kevin Blackwell was asking for. Anyone who has listened to Blackwell’s pre-match interviews before, (see my blog about it below) he always complains that Leeds lost because they were luckless. I wonder what excuse he will use if they lose to Millwall next week, here’s a few suggestions for him…

"We need even MORE luck"
"Our players were stuffed on Mince Pies"
"It was Santa's fault - I've been a very bad boy this year"
"My car broke down"
"... hmmm ...."

and finally the proper answer, but one I doubt I’ll hear…
"We didn't play well. Millwall were the better team. I'll change my tactics"
Hopefully he won’t need to use any of these as Super Leeds will win!

Still on the topic of football I am currently watching the Arsenal – Chelsea game. As I type it is currently 2-2 and is an absolutely fantastic game. I hope Arsenal win this game and indeed The Premiership.

I believe this year its either going to be Arsenal or Chelsea for the title (although based upon my current predictions it’ll probably be Norwich City). If Chelsea win it’ll be a sad day for football as they would have bought the league. They won’t have won it by building a super team from scratch over many years.

Finally, I went to the cinema again last night to see The Forgotten starring Julianne Moore (from Hannibal). Good film, although it was slow to start. Like The Grudge there were a lot of moments that made me jump so I was on the edge of my seat a little throughout the film.

I won’t go into the plot details here as it’ll ruin it for people who want to see the film, but I will say there were a lot of questions left unanswered at the end of the film. It seemed to have been rushed and felt unfinished.

Last night I went to see Christmas with the Kranks at the cinema. I quite liked it; it was a nice, light hearted Christmas comedy. By no means a classic but still a good thing to watch this time of year. My friend who I went to watch the film with hated it. Still there’s no pleasing everybody. We’ll go and see his choice of festive film soon – Surviving Christmas (which actually looks pretty good).

Some trailers for upcoming films I saw…

Meet the Fockers – Released in the UK, 28th January 2005
The sequel to Meet the Parents, one of my favourite films of all time. Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro return alongside Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand. Looks very funny, especially when Jinx the cat flushes the tiny dog down the toilet – it comes out blue!

Team America: World Police – Released in UK, 14th January 2005
A Thunderbirds style comedy focusing on modern day politics and the war in Iraq. Looks very rude and extremely funny. From the creators of South Park, this could be very good.

Are We There Yet? – Released in UK, 25th March 2005
Ice Cube from the rap group N.W.A. and such films as Friday and Three Kings stars in a toilet humour comedy where he takes two children across America. Contains many predictable events such as vomiting, urinating and slapstick humour. I’d like to see it, probably only on the 2-4-1 Orange Wednesday though.

Valiant – Released in UK, 25th March 2005
Computer animation from the geniuses behind the Shrek series. Follows the story of carrier pigeons in WWII. Looks very funny. Stars Ewan McGregor (who’s tipped to be the next 007), John Cleese and Ricky Gervais. Looking forward to this one…

Football now, Super Leeds United are away tomorrow evening to West Ham. The game is on the telly so all of the UK can have a good old laugh at the team they love to hate lose.

Once again, based upon recent form I can not see anything but a West Ham win tomorrow (painful as it is to admit). Still you never know what you’re going to get from Leeds. My other predictions this week haven’t been too good. Last night, I strongly believed, losing 1-0 at half time, Liverpool were heading for the Uefa Cup and would not enter the knock out phase of The Champions League. How wrong I was!

Lastly a comment on the state of the Leeds United kit this season. They have the usual sponsor on the front of the shirt – ok, fair enough, every team has this. Then the other month they got sponsorship on the backs of their shirt! Now it’s appearing on the backs of their shorts! They’re like walking billboards; I know the club are “a little” short on funds but this is ridiculous.

Mind you, I hear Roy Keane of Manchester United will soon have a similar type of sponsorship on his arse. He’s set to be sponsored by BT, after all “It’s good to talk”. :o)

Good luck to Leeds tomorrow – prove me wrong lads!

Ha ha ha! There’s a new excellent John Smiths ad on the TV. Most adverts on television are just sh*t and I just skip through them on Sky+ but these John Smith’s ones are certainly worth watching! Peter Kay is a genius.

In the past you’ve been able to watch them on the official John Smiths website. Maybe it’s because the ad is so new but it’s not there at the moment. To give you all the chance to see it, I’ve uploaded it here.

Once again, please do NOT link directly to this file on your website/forums. Instead link to the main site URL. It uses up bandwidth designed for site visitors only and remember – bandwidth costs money.

Lastly, remember to buy yourself some John Smith’s this Christmas and New Year. Firstly it’s very, very nice and secondly as long as people keep drinking it, Peter Kay will keep making the ads.

This morning a miracle occurred. I turned on my supposedly broken TV in the hope it had healed itself and low and behold it had! It is now working fine! Something must have happened overnight to bring the TV set back to life! A modern day miracle!

Of course the TV didn’t heal itself; while I do believe in miracles I don’t think they happen to solve faulty television sets! The fault was with the external cover that goes over the TV switch, it had become dislodged and when pressed in did not meet with the switch. This has now been fixed by and everything is fine.

I feel kinda silly though as I knew the switch cover was broken and never thought to look at the time! Still I’m very pleased it’s working again and I don’t have to fork out for a new TV set!

A brilliant episode of Dream Team on Sky One last night. Disturbed footballer Clyde Connelly had been having a hard time of it since is club Harchester United were relegated. His new boss was bullying him, he was falling out with team mates and turning to drinks and drugs. It all got too much for him and he dramatically killed himself by jumping from the top of the stadium after a fabulous performance for his club.

The thing that surprised me about the episode last night was that it was very graphic. It showed Connelly lying dead on the concrete floor in a massive pile of blood with bits of brain next to his mangled head! This was shown at 8pm justafter The Simpsons and before the watershed.

Now I wasn’t shocked or offended by this, but young children could easily have been watching and I don’t think this kind of material would be suitable for them. The Sky One announcer didn’t even give a warning before the start. I'm sure somebody with too much time on their hands will write a complaint although I think it should just be left alone. If you took things too seriously, you would always be complaining about stuff you see or hear on TV or radio.

Anyway, the episode was well produced and performed by all parties in which is a very good series. One of the few things on Sky One actually worth watching now that new Simpsons has become sh*t and Oliver Beene has ended.

I haven’t watched the series for too long (its been around since 1997), but what I have seen so far has been greatly entertaining and is miles better than the other popular Football Drama “Footballers’ Wives” (a fourth series starts in the New Year BTW!).

Moving on, a very annoying thing happened this evening. My TV which had recently been repaired and returned less than 2 weeks ago broke again! The same problem as before – On/Off switch is broken. I’ll have to give the repair shop a ring tomorrow, but I refuse to pay out again for the same works.

Televisions similar to mine are a lot cheaper now, so instead of paying another repair fee (if charged) I think I will go for a new, budget model in the January Sales. At least that will be brand new and come with a 1 year manufacturer’s warranty.

Its one major expense I really could do without. Maybe I should do what some sites do and have a “Paypal Donation” section so I can cheekily ask visitors to send me their hard earned cash!

Well as expected it was another dismal performance from Leeds United yesterday. The 2-0 defeat against Leicester now leaves Leeds just five points above the relegation zone.

The frustrating aspect about Leeds is that the team should be doing a lot better. While the players have to take a large part of the blame, some of it must be given to manager Kevin Blackwell. I’ve been fully behind him until this weekend, but now I think it is time for a change.

Blackwell doesn’t seem to know how to improve the performance and when asked what went wrong makes up pathetic excuses and blames luck. In football you make your own luck and besides which Leeds have been lucky. A 6-1 win over QPR the other week as well as remarkably fast recoveries from both Brian Deane and Clark Carlisle.

I’ve uploaded Blackwell’s latest post-match interview here, to me he doesn’t seem to have a clue!

Sticking with Leeds United, the always eagerly awaited FA Cup 3rd Round draw was made this afternoon. With so many non-league clubs still in the competition, I was hoping for an easy tie.

Sadly Leeds got Premiership side Birmingham City away. It could have been a lot worse, Birmingham are struggling this season so a win won’t be impossible. Hinckley United or Exeter would have been better though!

Today I was also doing a bit of site building for Sparkster.net. Long time visitors will remember when I was making updates throughout the summer covering such topics as Euro 2004 and Big Brother 5. These were made on an old site layout and once this new design was created were taken offline. The content has now been added to the Blog Archives into the new site design so you can relive those summer blogs.

I ended up going to the late show of Churchill: The Hollywood Years at midnight last night. The cinema was really quite, only me and my friend watching – nice having a private screening!

The film plays on the issue that Americans played such a major part in World War II, when in fact they probably didn’t. This is done by casting Christian Slater as Winston Churchill, an all action American hero who saves Britain, defeats the Nazis and wins the heart of Princess Elizabeth who he than marries.

A nice idea, but even with Vic & Bob, Rik Mayall, Harry Enfield and other British comedians does not work.

The film was very disappointing, the trailer made it look so much better than it actually was. Even if you like the British comedians who star in the film I wouldn’t recommend going to see this movie and I don’t say that very often.

Anyway moving on, Super Leeds United are in action against the crisp eating Leicester City. Both teams have arguably under achieved this season so it’ll be an interesting game.

I really don’t know what to expect from Leeds week to week. One week they are beating high flying QPR 6-1 and then losing to a team without a win all season. I have a bad feeling about today so am going for a 2-0 win to Leicester. :o(

Also in action today is my local team Bath City. They are playing Peterborough United in the FA Cup. If Bath win they could potentially play a Premiership side (or Leeds) in the 3rd round of the cup. I would love it if Leeds got them, so good luck to Bath as well.

Last night I went to see Bad Santa at the cinema. I had never really planned on seeing this but as it was December, bored on a midweek evening, I thought I would watch a funny Christmas film.

It was certainly no classic but I am glad I went to see it. In the film, Billy Bob Thornton plays Willie, a drunken, abusive and crooked Santa Clause with his sidekick in crime Marcus a midget or “small person” (played by Tony Cox).

Willie goes to department stores dressed as Santa where he must put up with drooling, sneezing, smelly fat children asking him awkward questions about reindeer, elves and Mrs. Santa (she kicked him out for shagging Mrs. Santa’s sister). He survives by drinking himself stupid which then leads to bladder accidents. A funny film, one for the festive season but NOT for the kids!

One of the funniest moments of my trip to the cinema yesterday was not actually the film. It was a trailer for the British Comedy, Churchill: The Hollywood Years, which to my surprise was released today (I’ll be off again to see it this weekend).

It is a comedy based around World War 2, Winston Churchill and Hitler (yes, this subject can be funny!) and stars big names like Jon Culshaw, Harry Enfield, Rik Mayall, Vic & Bob to name a few, oh and a little known actor called Christian Slater.

Finally, I have been introduced by a friend into the new drama series Lost which is currently showing on ABC in America. It isn’t overhere on television until the New Year (Channel 4 and E4 are said to have the rights). I’ve only seen the Pilot so far but that is very, very good and it is receiving rave reviews overseas.

The series follows a group of people whose aeroplane has crash-landed miles off course onto a strange island. They assume the island is deserted but some mysterious, large creatures live there and see the new residents as lunch…

If you can’t wait to see it, there are ways of obtaining it if you like outside the US. I wouldn’t want to say how here but anybody who has ever downloaded an MP3 from the net (about 99% of Internet users!) should have some idea.

Hope you like the new festive layout for the December month! I thought I would make the effort to give the website a bit of a change for Christmas.

Just to let you know, like with previous months all of November’s blog entries has been moved to the News Archive Page. I notice some of you have been downloading the SL65 mobile phone advert. That’s still up there.
